MOYLAN REACHES OUT TO FEDERAL PARTNERS TO SEEK ASSISTANCE FOR THE DOUBLE SESSION QUANDARY
(Washington, D.C.) With the rising concerns shared by many students, faculty, and staff of both Simon Sanchez High School (SSHS), and John F. Kennedy High School (JFKHS) with the concerns over double sessions, Delegate James Moylan reached out to federal partners to seek options that may be available to alleviate the issue.
This afternoon, Delegate Moylan penned letters to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to seek out technical and or financial assistance that may assist with identifying a temporary facility for SSHS until either the current facility is upgraded or a new school is constructed. He also sent a letter to Lt. General Scott Spellman, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to seek out their support, including from a construction perspective.
“It was disheartening to hear the concerns of the students on the impact that double sessions are bringing towards their educational objectives. From facing reduced interactions with their educators and fellow students, to limited access for extracurricular activities such as sports. Unfortunately, these students are losing out on many experiences,” stated Delegate Moylan. “Let’s be realistic, a new Sanchez High won’t be opening its doors in 2024, and possibly even in 2025, therefore we need to look outside the box for temporary solutions, inclusive of with federal entities. I am hoping to hear of options or maybe even financial or other resources from federal partners, which may help to a certain degree. As a government, we need to exhaust all efforts for our students, and I will continue to make inquiries,” added Delegate Moylan.
Delegate Moylan will also be reaching out to the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) to seek out solutions as well. Attached are the two letters submitted.
