MOYLAN CO-SPONSORS MEASURE TO MAKE THE DISTRIBUTION OF FENTANYL THAT LEADS TO DEATH A FELONY MURDER

(Washington, D.C.) After returning from a CODEL earlier in the week to visit the borders in Uvalde and Eagle Pass counties in Texas, Delegate James Moylan cosponsored the “Felony Murder for Deadly Fentanyl Distribution Act of 2023”. The measure, which was introduced by Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas, would amend the federal statute on murder, to include any death which was caused due to the overdose of fentanyl. If enacted, any individual convicted of murder by distributing fentanyl shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for life (in Guam it would be imprisonment). “During our visit to the border, it was evidently clear that the issues those communities were facing with drugs mirrors what we are dealing with in Guam. A clear message needs to be sent out to those distributing drugs, that if you commit the crime, then the consequences will be severe. Any individual whose life is lost due to a fentanyl overdose, the individual or individuals who provided the victim the drug shall face life imprisonment if convicted. A strong message needs to be sent out, as we continue to address this severe drug problem”, stated Delegate Moylan. “I thank Congressman Gonzales for taking the lead on the measure and asking us to co-sponsor. This Congress is committed to addressing the many issues associated with drugs entering through the borders, that we are working with Tony and a few other members to ensure we can secure the adequate resources to protect our island as well”, added Delegate Moylan.
