Moylan Announces 2026 Congressional Art Competition Winners
(Washington DC) — Congressman James Moylan proudly announced the winners of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition, recognizing Guam’s talented young artists for their creativity, vision, and artistic excellence. This year’s competition centered around the theme, “How Guam Shapes Me,” encouraging students to reflect on the people, culture, traditions, and experiences that influence their identity and connection to the island.
Each year, the nationwide competition gives high school students from across the country the opportunity to showcase artwork that reflects their communities, experiences, and perspectives. Winning entries from Guam were selected by a panel of local judges representing Guam’s creative and cultural community.
This year’s winners are:
- 1st Place: Carmel Mariano of St. John's School for “Magandang Umaga”
- 2nd Place: John Dudkiewicz of George Washington High School for “Culture & History”
- 3rd Place: Cara Guerrero of St. John's School for “Waves of Memories”
- People’s Choice Award: Mia Grasser of Notre Dame High School for “More Than Meets the Eye”
As the first-place winner, Carmel Mariano’s artwork will be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol alongside winning pieces from congressional districts across the nation.
“Our young artists continue to amaze us with their creativity and ability to tell powerful stories through their work,” said Congressman Moylan. “These pieces reflect the talent, culture, identity, and perspective of Guam’s next generation. I congratulate each student who participated and thank them for sharing their gifts with our island community.”
Congressman Moylan also expressed his appreciation to this year’s judges for their time and thoughtful consideration throughout the selection process:

- Mark Murer of Mark Murer Mosaics
- Guam Leaf founder Andrea Murer
The Congressman also thanked the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency for hosting this year’s competition and recognized Director Angie Taitague for her continued support of Guam’s arts community and youth programs.
“The arts are an important part of how we preserve culture, express identity, and inspire future generations,” Congressman Moylan added. “I am proud to see so many talented students across Guam stepping forward and sharing their voices through art.”
