CONGRESSMAN MOYLAN INTRODUCES RESOLUTION SUPPORTING NATIONAL OBSERVANCE OF GUAM LIBERATION DAY

July 20, 2025

(Washington, D.C.) Congressman Moylan has introduced H.Res.545, a congressional resolution supporting the designation of July 21, 2025, as Guam Liberation Day and encouraging the President to issue a proclamation calling on all Americans to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

The resolution commemorates the liberation of Guam from Japanese occupation during World War II and honors the resilience of the people of Guam, the bravery of the island’s Greatest Generation, and the sacrifice of the American service members who fought to restore freedom to our shores.

From 1941 to 1944, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the people of Guam endured a brutal occupation marked by forced labor, starvation, violence, and displacement under enemy control. This resolution acknowledges the pain and perseverance of those who lived through these harrowing years and its lasting impact on generations of families in Guam. “Guam’s people endured unimaginable hardship during the occupation, yet they emerged with courage and unity that laid the foundation for the island’s strength and recovery,” said Congressman Moylan. “This resolution honors both our Greatest Generation and the U.S. forces whose selflessness brought liberation to our shores.”

H.Res.545 recognizes the full scope of Guam’s wartime experience: the suffering of civilians, the sacrifice of American troops, and the resilience that defined the island’s recovery. It affirms that Guam’s story is a vital chapter in the broader history of the U.S.

“Too often, Guam’s history has been treated as a footnote,” added Congressman Moylan. “But the resilience, strength, and contributions of our people during such a dark and difficult time deserve to be remembered for generations to come.”

This resolution marks a critical step toward national recognition of Guam’s Liberation Day and the extraordinary cost of freedom. It honors the courage of those who endured, the memory of those who never came home, and the brave individuals who fought to liberate them. In commemorating this day, we affirm that Guam’s story is one of unshakeable courage and that even in the darkest times, the spirit of our people always endures.
