CONGRESSMAN MOYLAN INTRODUCES RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING WAR SURVIVOR REMEMBRANCE DAY
(Washington, D.C.) Congressman Moylan has introduced House Resolution 545, formally recognizing War Survivor Remembrance Day in honor of the resilience and sacrifice of Guam’s Greatest Generation who endured the atrocities of war under Japanese occupation during World War II. The resolution designates June 28th as War Survivor Remembrance Day- a day to commemorate the lives lost, honor the strength of those who endured, and reaffirm the nation's commitment to preserving the history and legacy of Guam’s people during wartime.
“Guam’s war survivors endured unimaginable hardship, yet they emerged with courage and unity that laid the foundation for the island’s strength and recovery,” said Congressman Moylan. “This resolution is a solemn promise that the pain and courage of Guam’s war survivors will never be forgotten.”
From 1941 to 1944, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the people of Guam were subjected to years of forced labor, starvation, violence, and displacement under Japanese occupation. This resolution acknowledges the pain and perseverance of those who lived through these harrowing years and its lasting impact on generations of families in Guam.
“What our survivors endured should not be buried in the past,” added Congressman Moylan. “Their strength rebuilt our island, their stories shaped our identity, and this resolution ensures their sacrifices are honored for generations to come.”
This resolution marks an important step toward national recognition of Guam’s war survivors and the historical injustices they faced. War Survivor Remembrance Day will stand as a lasting tribute to their courage and a reminder that even in the darkest times, the spirit of our people always endures.
